(January 29, 2006) — WEBSTER — The Spencerport Rangers are still
the champions of Monroe County wrestling.
Pittsford's Kyle Borshoff
also collected yet another title, while Brockport made its best
attempt in years to grab one at the Monroe County Championships
at Webster Schroeder.
The Rangers won this league tournament on
Saturday for the 15th consecutive year under coach Bill Jacoutot
with 223 points and a pair of weight-class champions. Bryan Bourne
won the 152-pound division and Anthony Borzilleri finished first
at 119.
"We really had great balance," Jacoutot said. "We had 10
guys place in the top four, and 11 place.
"It was significant to
winning the tournament. (The kids) came up big."
So did Borshoff,
a senior who won his fourth league crown and improved to 33-0 this
season after defeating Spencerport's Chris Collura 15-4 in the 130
final.
A two-time place winner at the state tournament, Borshoff
will aim for his third Section V class championship in two weeks.
He signed a letter of intent in December to wrestle at American
University, where his brother Jasen is a freshman.
"I'm wrestling
as well as I can," Borshoff said. "I'm hoping to keep it up and
that I can win states. I'm after the state title this year."
Brockport,
led by senior co-captains Justin James and Anthony Sargent, strived
to elevate its standing in Section V and the state.
The Blue Devils
are doing something right under coach James Cannon.
They put seven
wrestlers in the finals and left Schroeder with five league champions:
2005 state qualifier Trevor Irwin at 96, John-Martin Cannon at 135,
Sargent at 160, '05 league champion Erik Schuth at 171 and 215-pounder
Alex Nwaehujor.
Brockport is state-ranked eighth among large schools,
yet another "we haven't done that in years" type of fact for the
program.
"We want to be in the top five in the state because no
Brockport team has done that before," John-Martin Cannon, whose
father coaches the team, said. "We wrestle Wayne, and if we beat
them, we have a shot.
"Our captains have done a great job. Justin
is a maniac, he works so hard. Anthony has great leadership. He
takes JV kids and works with them in practice to correct their mistakes."
Sargent won his first league title in five tries after not placing
in last year's tournament.
It was part of a disappointing end to
his 2005 season, in which he qualified for the SuperSectionals but
couldn't wrestle because of a separated shoulder.
"I missed everything
(including summer tournaments)," Sargent said. "I did 20 weeks of
physical therapy, just because I wanted to be sure about (its health).
I ended up tearing three ligaments.
"I was pretty doubtful about
our team. We had a lot of kids back, but we have a young team, with
just five seniors. I wanted to see how well we would come together.
It ended up working out well."
