Linville wins 171-pound final in OT as Rangers claim Clayton Barnard
title. James Johnson Staff writer (January 15, 2006) — PARMA — Justin
Linville and a few Spencerport teammates arrived at the tournament
with enough incentive to fill a school bus.
Some of the Rangers have read on Web site postings or heard through
word of mouth that Spencerport wrestling is down a notch or two.
"They always expect us to fall," said Linville, one of the team's
tri-captains. "We've done a lot better than anyone has expected."
The Rangers continued their dominance of the Clayton Barnard Memorial
Tournament, scoring 272.5 points to beat out Holley (194) and host
Hilton (159.5) for first place in the 18-team event.
Linville rallied to beat Geneva's Mark Bloom 6-4 in overtime of
the 171-pound final to help Spencerport win the tournament for the
18th time in 26 years.
Mike Hicks, another one of Spencerport's tri-captains, emerged as
the champion at 140. Spencerport sophomores Nick Terenzi at 112
and Chris Collura at 130 produced convincing wins over Holley wrestlers
during the finals.
Spencerport's Matt Piedmonte at 103, 145-pounder Chris Vigliotti
and Bryan Bourne at 152 also won their weight divisions.
During the last week, the Rangers have bounced back from a fifth-place
finish at Union-Endicott Duals with a 21-18 dual-match win against
Brockport and this first-place tournament finish. "Last year we
lost a lot of guys, so people are looking at us as underdogs," Collura
said.
Bloom beat Linville earlier this season, 3-2 during the finals of
Spencerport's Teike-Bernabi Tournament. Linville rallied from a
4-1 deficit to beat one of Geneva's tough middleweights.
A single-leg takedown by Linville with 14 seconds remaining in the
third period tied the score 4-4. Bloom and Linville both went for
the potential winning takedown in overtime, but the Spencerport
senior was able to spin by Bloom and get credit for the points.
"That stuck in my mind," said Linville. "I remembered a lot of the
things that happened during that match. I said, 'I can't lose to
him again.' It was embarrassing (to lose at Spencerport) in front
of the hometown fans."
Geneva senior James Lyons seemed determined, too.
Fairport 160-pound senior Sean Sechrist (24-3) was a wrestler on
a 12-match win streak, but Lyons used bursts of quickness on the
circle's edge to win the weight division's final, 16-6.
Lyons was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.
"I knew he was tough," Lyons said. "He wrestled my drill partner
(Nick Fratto) last year and gave him a tough match. When I drilled
with him, he kept saying, 'Watch out for (Sechrist).'
"He has some weird moves. Sometimes, I didn't know what to do but
scramble my way out."
Hilton junior Mark Ranzenbach knew what to do with North Rose-Wolcott's
Mike Tellier during the 125 final. Ranzenbach, champion last year
at Barnard, won 8-1.
"It meant a lot to me," said Ranzenbach, who hopes to earn his 100th
varsity victory next week. "I'm the first Hilton wrestler to win
this tournament twice. I think I wrestled awesome.
"It must be the shoes. They're my friend's and I think that the
shoes are good luck. This is the first time that I've worn them
this season, but I wore them last season too."
