Spencerport's Nick Terenzi, top, works for a 10-3 decision over Gates Chili's Lewis Cucchiara in the 130-pound final Saturday at the Section V Class AA championships at Spencerport. |
(February 17, 2008) — Bryan Bourne has done nothing but win since he joined the Spencerport wrestling team five years ago as an eighth-grader.
On Saturday afternoon at Spencerport High School, the senior added another Section V championship to his rsum and, in the process, led the Rangers to the Section V Class AA team championship.
Spencerport continued its undefeated season by amassing 274.5 points, ahead of second-place Fairport (162).
All 15 Spencerport wrestlers placed in the tournament, and the eight sectional champions are the most in Section V history.
With his pin over Fairport's Dave Foley in 1 minute, 31 seconds at 160 pounds, Bourne became the first wrestler in Spencerport High School history to capture five Section V championships.
He won his first when he was in eighth grade.
"It really means a lot to me and it's a great accomplishment, but I still have a lot of work to do," Bourne said.
With his fifth Class AA championship, Bourne passed Gary Borelli, who won four Section V Class A titles from 1996-99.
Bourne received a bye in the first two rounds before defeating teammate John Troina in the semifinals by pin in 49 seconds.
With his high school career coming to a close, Bourne has just one goal left to accomplish: winning a state championship. He has improved his finish each year at the state tournament, finishing fifth, fourth and then second last year.
"I'm not done yet. I have to put the pieces together and I'll have four tough state matches," Bourne said.
"The competition gets better every year."
Spencerport coach Bill Jacoutot agrees.
"Bryan is one of the best I have ever coached, but for him to be up there in the top two or three, he has to win at states," Jacoutot said.
The team championship is Spencerport's sixth straight and the 20th overall sectional championship for Jacoutot.
"This is one of the better teams I have coached," Jacoutot said.
"They have put in the time and the effort; now we have to see how they do at states."
Nick Terenzi captured his second straight Class AA title, and third overall, for the Rangers at 130 pounds with a 10-3 decision over Lewis Cucchiara of Gates Chili.
The sectional champions advance to next weekend's state tournament qualifying matches, which will be held on Friday and Saturday at RIT's Gordon Field House.
