(January 20, 2008) — PARMA — As the Spencerport Rangers surge forward through another wrestling season, it brings up another question.

Is this edition the best of the Bill Jacoutot-coached Spencerport teams?

Jacoutot has little interest weighing in on the subject publicly. Not with the Monroe County championships, Section V championships and SuperSectionals still to come.

The current Rangers were too busy Saturday night to state their case, as they won yet another tournament, the Clayton Barnard Memorial at Hilton.

Spencerport won the Barnard for the 11th consecutive year after Nick Terenzi, Paul Morabito, Chris Collura, Dan Maier, Byran Bourne and Paul Glover won their weight divisions to help the Rangers score 290 points.

The Rangers' total was 43 points more than Fairport's strong showing of 247.

"Being from Spencerport we like to do our best," Terenzi said. "If you don't win, it's OK, as long as you do your best, but we like to win.

"It's a great feeling (being ranked nationally). It's been one of our goals for awhile and we finally succeeded in doing that. A lot of people say you have to earn praise, and we do earn it. We're all a team, even the parents. (Jacoutot) is proud of us."

W.I.N. magazine has Spencerport at No. 15 in its national rankings. The Rangers are No. 1 in the New York State Sportswriters Association's dual meet rankings.

"It's hard to compare but it's definitely one of the best," Terenzi said about the 2007-08 Rangers. "We're all very close, all very motivated.

"It's my last year. I want to do good for myself, my father and Mr. J., of course."

Jacoutot, 55 and in his 40th year inside the sport, said its his job to keep the Rangers grounded.

"There's plenty to worry about," Jacoutot said. "Based on blood-pressure medication and my hairline, I've done my share.

"Winning hides a lot of things. You shut your eyes and you're going to be in trouble."

Fairport, which lost to Spencerport in a dual meet early this season, trailed the Rangers by 30 points before the finals.

"This year we had 100 points after the first day," Fairport coach Mike Kohl said. "That's a big jump by the kids. They believe that they can win. They wrestled aggressively.

"I've never coached a team that has wrestled at this level. They keep improving. Spencerport sets the bar, no doubt. We wanted to give them a run."

Fairport had eight wrestlers make it to finals, five in head-to-head matchups with Spencerport wrestlers. Rangers won three of those meetings.

"People have a comment on our team whether they think they are good or not," Jacoutot said. "That's how it is."

Greece Olympia coach Tony Russo, who wrestled under Jacoutot at Spencerport, does not see too much room for improvement when it comes to the Rangers' lineup.

"I think it's the best team that he's ever had," Russo said. "There's not many whose ever been nationally-ranked. They went to the U-E Duals and dominated. Those were the best teams in the state. I've already had this conversation with former teammates. They say, 'We could've done this or that.' You know what? Whatever."
