(January 9, 2005) — A strong season for Wayne wrestling took a history-making turn Saturday.

Wayne became the first Section V team in nearly 11 years to defeat Spencerport during a dual meet.

The Eagles defeated the Rangers 28-20 to finish in third place at the Union-Endicott Duals, just outside Binghamton. Joe Paz, a 189-pound sophomore, decisioned Ben Labiase, 3-1, to clinch Wayne's victory over the tournament's defending champion.

"Obviously you respect that streak," Wayne coach Scott Freischlag said. "We had some kids take major steps forward. There was a lot of pressure on the kids.

"We're pretty excited. We've never beaten them before."

Eight of the state's top 10 teams were in the tournament.

Wayne finished second to Spencerport last year and is ranked third in the state, one slot behind Spencerport. The Eagles also earned a rare win at Canandaigua earlier this season.

Steve Singley, a 103-pound wrestler, improved his record to 26-1 after he finished undefeated in the meet. Luke Baum (135 pounds/25-1 record), Nathan Patterson (145/24-3) and Josh Patterson (160/26-1) also improved their records without any losses.

"We look at it as a huge accomplishment and a credit to our program after the hard work that we've put in," Freischlag said. "We know what their program is about. To beat a team of that caliber is an accomplishment."

Spencerport's last loss to a Section V team in a dual was to Canandaigua in February 1994, a string of 114 matches.

Spencerport's Eric Piedimonte finished undefeated at 112 pounds, as well as teammates Bryan Bourne at 145 and Jared Plucknette at 189.

"We have to regroup," Spencerport assistant coach Bill Jacoutot Jr. said. "We still have a whole season ahead of us, with plenty of battles."

Section XI's Islip and Valley Central-IX advanced to the finals.
