Spencerport tops U-E duals
Staff Reports
Press & Sun-Bulletin
After winning state large-school team titles in 2001, 2002 and 2004, the Spencerport wrestling has failed to win the title each of the last two seasons.
That "drought" may come to an end this season.
Spencerport capped an impressive tournament run by defeating Fulton, 26-15, in the championship match of the Union-Endicott Duals on Saturday.
The Rangers clinched the victory over Fulton with one match to go. Leading 23-12 with two bouts to go, Fulton needed two pins to win the match outright.
However, Spencerport's Matt Spezio lost by a 5-0 decision to Fulton's Dillon Shue at 140 pounds in the next-to-last match, making the score 23-15 and giving Spencerport an insurmountable lead.
Spencerport, from Section 5, went 4-0 on the day. After beating Sayville, 43-21, in the first round, Spencer beat Waverly, 33-29 in the quarterfinals and top-seeded Islip, 25-22 in the semifinals.
The performance will undoubtedly move the Rangers to the No. 1 ranking in next week's New York State Sports Writers Association poll. They entered the tournament ranked fifth.
It was a tough day for Section 4 teams at the tournament. Though Waverly did manage to go 3-1 in likely keeping its No. 1 spot in the small-school rankings, Chenango Forks saw its hopes of a large-school team title likely end.
The Blue Devils entered the U-E Duals ranked first in the state among large schools. But after a first-round bye, Forks lost in decisive fashion to East Meadow, 40-18. Forks did beat Brockport, 28-25, in the consolation round en route to a share of fifth place with Waverly.
Defending champion Johnson City lost its first-round match to Mexico, 36-25, and host Union-Endicott lost to Fulton, 52-18, in the first round.
