Spencerport
handles Attica in non-league wrestling
Democrat and Chronicle
ATTICA,
N.Y. (Feb. 10, 2000) -- Spencerport extended its dominance over Section
V wrestling yesterday, defeating Attica 30-13 in a key non-league match.
Kevin
Sawyer decisioned Clayton Conway, 11-4, at 125 pounds for visiting Spencerport
(8-0, 10-0), No. 1 in the Democrat and Chronicle large-schools poll,
while Attica is No. 2.
The
match was close until the third period, when Sawyer capitalized on some
scramble situations. That pushed the Rangers, ranked third in the recent
state large-schools poll, to a 7-6 lead. Spencerport won the next four
matches to take control of the meet.
Senior
Joe Celento decisioned Josh Kibler 4-2 in the 160-pound weight class
for Spencerport.
Senior
Brandon Morris upset Chuck Olas, decisioning him 4-3 in overtime at
119 pounds for Attica (7-0, 15-2), ranked eighth in the latest state
poll. Morris took a 2-0 lead in the second period, but Olas tied it
before the end of regulation. Both wrestlers had opportunities in overtime.
Morris scored a takedown with about 30 seconds remaining to clinch the
victory.
Senior
Matt VanSon decisioned Don Zimmerman 15-7 at 152 pounds for the Blue
Devils. VanSon set the tone and scored a five-point move early, countering
a single-leg takedown by Olas. Zimmerman defeated VanSon 12-10 early
this year.
''They
were relentless and didn't give up and really that was the difference
in the match,'' Attica coach Eric Romesser said. ''We juggled our lineup,
dropped a couple of guys down and moved a couple of guys up. I knew
we had to change some things around to give us an opportunity to win
the dual meet.''
