Saturday's Section 5 SuperSectionals were full of last-second surprises.
Fairport wrestler Mike Kohl topped McQuaid's Mark Voci 3-2 with four seconds left at 119 pounds. And Spencerport's Joe Barbara rallied for an 8-7 victory over Greece Athena's Dan Nier in the 105-pound category with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Kohl's vicotry marked the third time this year he had beaten Voci by one point. He also won 1-0 and 3-2.
"This was my first time being behind him," said Kohl, who earned a trip to this weekend's state tournament in Syracuse. "I was pretty scared because it was my goal all year to get to states. For a minute I didn't think it was going to happen."
With :08 remaining, the wrestlers went out of bounds.
"I knew I had to hurry things along... and something just came from somewhere," said Kohl, who put a lateral move on Voci for the win.
This was Barbera and Nier's second meeting in two weeks.
Before last weekend, the two had not squared off since they competed at teh pee-wee level several years ago.
Barbera was trailing Nier 7-6 before rallying for the takedown in Satuday's match. Though Barbera was unable to see teh clock, he knew his time was running short. His thoughts were focused on a takedown.
"That's all I was worried about," said Barbera, who also defeated Nier in the Class A sectional final last weekend.
Barbera was voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler after his victory over Nier, the state's top-ranked wrestler at 105. This is his first trip to the state tournament after three seasons of competition.
